Cancer is the number two killer in the Bahamas and most of the Caribbean after heart disease. There is a very small minority of countries in the English-speaking Caribbean, 4 out of 13, equipped to treat cancer with radiation therapy. While Cobalt-based radiation therapy is the mainstay in Jamaica, Trinidad, and Barbados, newer private centres offer more modern linear accelerator-based radiation therapy in Jamaica and Trinidad, similar to The Cancer Centre in The Bahamas.
A component of The Medical Pavilion Bahamas, The Cancer Centre Bahamas is among the leading comprehensive cancer screening, diagnostic and treatment centres in the English-speaking Caribbean. The centre is the only one of its kind in this hemisphere and the only accredited American College of Radiation Oncology (ACRO) Centre outside the United States and North America. It is the only one to house the entire medical, pediatric, surgical, and radiation oncology staff under one roof, with all supporting areas and state-of-the-art equipment.
Located within The Medical Pavilion Bahamas, The Cancer Centre Bahamas is a private, non-government facility, which enables it to move speedily to adapt to new technology, equipment, and personnel, thereby keeping it on the leading and cutting edge of cancer care. Housed in a new US$12 million facility, with a brand new Medical Oncology Division and its own Chemotherapy Infusion Centre, which functions as a Day-Hospital, The Cancer Centre offers all three treatment modalities for cancer in medical, surgical, and radiation oncology.
The Centre is always searching for new techniques and modalities that expand the horizons of treating this deadly disease, such as Stem Cell, Gene, and Alternative Therapies. The Cancer Centre Bahamas was the first to perform Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) and High Dose Rate Brachytherapy in The Caribbean. It performs 3-D Conformal Radiation Therapy as its minimum standard of care delivered. The Centre is also a leader in integrating multidisciplinary cancer care utilizing all three primary conventional modalities of Radiation, Medical, and Surgical Oncology while seeing continued efforts at screening and surveillance programs to enhance early detection and prevention, as with The Breast Centre.
